The Balanced Account

Though I should work through each day

And into the night, from now to the sun’s disappearing,

Though I should keep track of the debt,

And mark each line off, the account would never be balanced.

But the question is not, “How can I repay?”

For a gift is not for repayment.

If we deserved what’s given by God,

Might he, in return, be our debtor?

When some people receive a gift from a friend

They, too, think they must earn it,

And pay back in kind, which cheapens the act,

For giving just means obligation.

So let me receive what’s given in love,

And give as God grants me some measure,

For love’s own reward is when it’s received

Just as much as when given.
